WORLD COUGHING CHAMPIONSHIP

Japanese wheeze into
Quarter-finals

Japan beat Croatia 18-10 in coughing classic
The Japanese team enjoy a well-earned Benylin
BRISBANE: The 8th World Coughing Championship entered the knockout stages last night when the Japanese team beat the much fancied Croatia to clinch the last quarter-final place. "It is are very good result. I very pleased for the lads" said Japanese captain Honda Suzuki after their victory.

The Japanese went ahead early on when Harikiri Wakibaki coughed sharply after only two minutes build-up and successfully hockled a good firm pellet from 25 yards. A spirited response from the Croatians saw much wheezing and clearing of the throat but they were unable to finish.

The Japanese renewed the pressure in the second half. Finally it was young Kendo Nagasaki who clinched the quarter-final place for his country with a 4 minute 58 second masterpiece of a cough. He built from the deep within the gut starting with a skilled series of wheezes, gradually developing into a wonderful mix of liquid chesty coughs before finishing with the most deft of splutters. The judges had no choice but to award high marks.

There was no way back for Croatia who, it has to be said, have failed to shine in this tournament since Milosevic Milosevicic was sent home amid accusations that he had taken Throaties or similar phlegm loosening medications shortly before their match against Scotland.

Result: Japan 18 - Croatia 10

Yesterday's other group results:
Spain 24 - Estonia 24
(Spain win 28:24 after extra cough)
Guatemala 21 - USA 8

Quarter Finals:

Spain vs. Belgium       Finland vs. Guatemala
Iceland vs. Japan         China vs. Kazakhstan

HELSINKI: Triple-jumper Jimmy Edwards sprang into the record books again on Tuesday night at the Puddi International Challenge athletics meeting. He broke the long-standing Quadruple-jump World Record with a "hop, skip, bounce & jump" of 18.33 metres.
"I'm over the moon" said Edwards, "I hurt my arse on the `bounce' bit but it was worth it".

The previous record of 5.28 metres was set by Sergei Brzkvnski of Scotland in 1815 - the last time a Quadruple-jump event was held.
